The History of
Fishgate
Hull has been associated with fish from the northern seas since the fourteenth century when vessels from the East Coast of England first went to Norway and then Iceland. In the late nineteenth century steam trawlers from Hull and elsewhere pioneered distant water trawling on a grand scale and by the middle of the twentieth century Hull could claim to be the largest distant water port in the World.
Inevitably this position could not be held in the late twentieth century but the traditions lived on and Hull is still an important trading centre for fish and fish products.
In the late 1990s Hull decided that it would take the bold step and consolidate its position by building a market that was everything that the food business were demanding in food safety, quality and traceabilty.
This was Fishgate which opened its doors in the Autumn of 2000. Visitors from all over the World have now seen what we can offer and we hope we have put down a benchmark that will become a standard for what is one of the finest nutritious foods that nature can provide.
